AI started building hardware. Voters started pushing back.
GPT-6 designs a gadget, ChatGPT passes 1.2 billion weekly users, and data centers land on the midterm ballot.
OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra designed a working gadget in under a week
Two OpenAI staff used the model for the case, circuit board layout, firmware and interface of a small device that talks to its Codex coding agent. A manufacturer still needed several rounds of fixes because the model missed real-world tolerances and assembly details.
Why it matters: AI is moving from writing code to designing physical products, though shop-floor know-how still matters.
AI can draw the board now. Someone who has built things still has to make it real.

Anthropic's FlashProve verifies which model answered
An open-source prototype, built with EPFL and MIT, that proves a reply came from a specific model without exposing the model. Slow and limited for now, with no production plans.
Data centers were on the midterm ballot
Ballotpedia counted at least 41 local measures, 21 of them in Ohio, including a recall vote over a $1 billion Meta project.
